The field for Thunderpick World Championship 2026 is complete: seven invited Counter-Strike 2 teams will be joined by Virtus.pro, who took the remaining place through a closed qualifier. The Malta event runs October 14-18 at the BLAST Arena studio and advertises a $1,000,000 total prize pool. The announcement names participants, not opening matchups or a champion.

Falcons, FURIA, Legacy, Aurora, 9z, BETBOOM and PARIVISION received the invitations. FURIA return as defending champions, while Legacy enter the field after their FISSURE Playground 3 title. Virtus.pro’s route is different from both: they had to qualify to appear alongside the invited clubs. Those backgrounds help explain the lineup without pretending that a past trophy supplies an October result.

The competition has a clearly defined route from field to trophy. Eight entrants begin in two double-elimination groups. Four survive for single-elimination playoffs, where losing a series ends the title run. Standard matches are best-of-three; the grand final changes to best-of-five. The event listing additionally schedules a best-of-three match for third place.

This October slot also sits ahead of the November 2 invitation cutoff for the PGL Singapore Major. Results in Malta could therefore matter to Valve Regional Standings, although a team list alone awards no points and settles no Major invitation. The useful calendar fact is the order: Thunderpick happens before that cutoff, leaving its actual ranking effect to be measured after the matches.

How the eight places were filled

Most of the entry list came through organizer invitations: Falcons, FURIA, Legacy, Aurora, 9z, BETBOOM and PARIVISION. Virtus.pro are the lone qualifier. This is more than a bookkeeping detail for anyone following the event’s selection process; calling every participant an invitee would misstate how the final berth was earned.

HLTV describes Virtus.pro’s place as their first big international LAN since IEM Chengdu 2025. The organization is not returning with an unchanged group: only b1st and tO0RO remain from that earlier roster. FURIA’s defending-champion status and Legacy’s recent FISSURE Playground 3 win provide different kinds of history. None removes the need to get through the Malta groups.

FURIA CS2
  • Entry: seven named clubs were invited; Virtus.pro earned the final place in a closed qualifier.
  • Groups: two double-elimination groups send four teams into the playoff bracket.
  • Finish: playoffs are single-elimination, followed by a best-of-five final and a listed third-place series.

The event page and the field report answer different questions. The report identifies who is in and how the final place was secured. The event page confirms the dates, format, venue and the third-place series. Neither assigns a group opponent to a named club in this announcement. A match preview with invented pairings would get ahead of the draw.

The $1,000,000 figure likewise describes the entire tournament pool. It is not money already won by any club on the list. The eventual distribution depends on results in groups and the bracket; even the defending champion starts this edition without a placement. Keeping entries, format and outcomes separate makes the preview useful before play begins.

Why the October date matters

The Malta dates give participating teams a competitive window before the Singapore Major invitation cutoff on November 2. An event can be relevant to the VRS race without guaranteeing every entrant a ranking gain. Progress through best-of-three groups and the knockout matches is what can create that effect; the invitation announcement itself cannot.

Four places are available beyond the group phase, meaning half the field will not reach the playoff bracket. The later rounds then narrow those four to a final, with a separate third-place match on the event schedule. This sequence is worth spelling out because it defines what the teams are competing to achieve, while the actual draw and results remain open.

For Virtus.pro, the occasion is also a return to this scale of international LAN after the Chengdu appearance cited by HLTV. For FURIA, it is a title defense. Legacy bring a separate recent tournament win. These are contrasting starting points within one field, not a ranking of likely finishers; the October series will supply the comparison that the announcement cannot.

The participant list is now settled, with seven invitations and Virtus.pro’s qualifying berth. Malta, October 14-18 and a $1,000,000 pool provide the setting; the group draw and competition will provide the remaining story. FURIA can attempt to defend their title, but no club has an October result yet.

The event’s position before the Major invitation cutoff makes its outcomes worth following beyond the trophy. Whether a particular entrant gains ranking ground or prize money is still a matter for the matches, beginning with the double-elimination groups.
